Our recycling plant and factory in India
In October 2023, we opened the doors to a place in India that is much more than just a workshop – a real milestone for the local team and our mission at Buy Food with Plastic.
Imagine walking into the room. Many lamps illuminate the room and make it bright and welcoming. In addition, the sun shines through the glass door. Air conditioning and ceiling fans make for a pleasant working environment. Instead of the drab white of most walls, your eyes meet a soft aquamarine. None of your steps fall in dirt. At first, this sounds pretty unremarkable, but at second glance, it is a big difference.
As soon as you step into the workshops next door, you are greeted by a completely different picture. The floor is dirty, at least as far as you can see, because the light sources only illuminate moderately. Darkness is added to the heat. There are no systems to regulate the temperature. This is how many workshops in India look. This difference changes a lot for our employees. Here, surrounded by inspiring images, the heart of our work in India comes to life.
In our modest workshop, plastic is given a second life: plastic waste that previously polluted streets and rivers is brought here, cleaned, sorted by color, and finally transformed into products that are not only useful but also sustainable. We are particularly focused on recyclable products, whose material, plastic, can be reused again if a product ever breaks. One of our important goals is ultimately to remove plastic from the environment.
Our employees – some of them from the community that is particularly affected by plastic pollution – bring all their creativity and craftsmanship here. They test products, develop new designs, and work on how we can further increase the positive impact on the environment.
The place also serves as a meeting point for ideas and strategy: In meetings, it is discussed how we can strengthen cooperation with partners and expand the reach of our activities. Volunteers from all over the world come here to help and learn. Donors and partners are also invited to visit the place and experience the energy and commitment.
Particularly inspiring for us is the visit of school classes, who visit us to experience firsthand the journey of plastic and its transformation into new products. Such visits enable education about sustainability as well as environmentally conscious action. The children marvel and experience how apparent waste becomes useful everyday items. Their questions, their interest, and their enthusiasm show us how important this place is for the coming generation.
This place has become a vibrant center for change. Everyone who works here knows that they are part of a larger whole. A room full of inspiration and community – a place where not only plastic, but also people receive a second chance and new perspectives.
