Bequest

By including Buy Food with Plastic in your will, you help close loops and create opportunities for people.

Make the future possible with your will

With a bequest to Buy Food with Plastic, you can pass on the values that are close to your heart. You enable people in low-income regions access to meals, income, and new opportunities, while helping to build local solutions to plastic pollution.

Buy Food with Plastic combines social impact with the circular economy: people collect plastic and receive meals, income, or other essential services in return. At the same time, local collection and recycling systems, environmental education programs, and jobs are created.

In this way, what might seem like waste can be turned into something that empowers people and enables long-term change.

This is not about caring less for your family. A non-profit organization can be part of your will in addition to your relatives. Even a small portion of the freely disposable share can have a positive impact in the long term.

Your will can thus have an impact beyond your own life.

Bequest in Switzerland

A testamentary gift means including a non-profit organisation in your will. For example, you can leave it a fixed sum of money, a specific item or a share of your estate.

There are two main ways to do this:

A legacy or bequest:

You specify a particular amount or asset. The organisation does not become part of the community of heirs.

Naming the organisation as an heir:

You name the organisation as an heir. It will then receive a share of your estate determined by you and will also acquire the rights and obligations associated with being an heir.

A testamentary gift does not mean that you have to exclude your family. Swiss inheritance law protects certain relatives through the so-called compulsory portion. You can dispose of the remaining portion – the free quota – as you wish.

Since the revision of Swiss inheritance law in 2023, descendants, spouses and registered partners are protected by a compulsory portion. The compulsory portion is half of their statutory inheritance claim.

Good to know:

Buy Food with Plastic is a non-profit, tax-exempt association based in Zurich. In the canton of Zurich, the association's tax exemption also includes inheritance and gift tax. If an estate is related to another canton, the rules applicable there may be relevant.

In 3 Steps

How it works

1. Record heirs

You enter your family situation and your legal heirs.

2. Determine bequests

You decide who you want to leave what share to. The DeinAdieu tool shows you the compulsory portions and your free quota.

3. Create and copy out the draft

DeinAdieu creates an individual draft. For a handwritten will, you must then copy it out entirely by hand, date it, and sign it. It is best to have an overview of your family, your assets, and the people or organizations you want to consider ready beforehand.

What happens to the donations?

Buy Food with Plastic

Every donation goes directly to Buy Food with Plastic's social projects. We are a Swiss organization that enables people in Nicaragua, Ghana, and India to pay for warm meals with plastic bottles.

The collected plastic is used to create new products in local workshops, generating income and strengthening the circular economy. At the same time, we are building the necessary infrastructure, including collection points, recycling stations, and transport routes.

In schools, we raise awareness among children and young people about environmental and waste issues and promote sustainable thinking that has an impact beyond the project.

FAQ

What does legacy mean?

A legacy is a bequest. In your will, you stipulate that a person or organization receives a specific sum of money or asset. The beneficiary organization does not automatically become an heir as a result.

What is a bequest simply explained?

With a bequest, you specify in your will that a portion of your assets will go to a non-profit organization after your death.

This can be a fixed amount, an item, or a share of your estate.

What is the difference between a legacy and an inheritance?

Under a legacy, Buy Food with Plastic receives a specific asset or sum of money.

Under a bequest, Buy Food with Plastic becomes an heir or co-heir and thus part of the community of heirs. This entails both rights and obligations.

Is a legacy worth it even with a small fortune?

Yes. There is no minimum amount for a legacy gift.

Even a small amount can make a difference. What matters is not the amount, but your wish to pass on a portion of your estate.

Your legacy will have an impact far beyond today – and will give future generations the chance to live a dignified life in a healthy environment.

Does my will have to be handwritten in Switzerland?

A holographic will must be written entirely in your own handwriting, as well as dated and signed by you.

There are other forms of wills as well, including the publicly notarized will.

Does Buy Food with Plastic pay inheritance tax on my legacy?

Buy Food with Plastic is a tax-exempt non-profit association based in the canton of Zurich.

Tax exemption in Zurich also includes inheritance and gift tax.

As inheritance taxes in Switzerland are regulated at the cantonal level and are generally determined by the deceased person's last place of residence, additional cantonal regulations and countervailing rules may apply when dealing with inheritances from other cantons.

For specific inheritance planning, we therefore recommend reviewing the tax situation on a case-by-case basis.

Can I include my family and an organization at the same time?

Yes. As long as the statutory forced heirship shares are respected, you can decide for yourself within the discretionary portion which people or organizations you wish to include.

Can I determine in which country and for what purpose my bequest will be used?

In principle, you can specify a purpose.

However, we recommend not phrasing it too narrowly. Many years can pass between writing a will and its later use. Projects and needs can change during this time.

A wording such as “for the non-profit projects of Buy Food with Plastic” gives us the opportunity to use your support where it can have the greatest long-term impact.

If a particular country or topic is especially important to you, please feel free to speak with us beforehand.

Who takes care of settling the household and the funeral?

This depends on your individual discount arrangement.

A benefit from Buy Food with Plastic does not automatically mean that we will organize the clearing of a residence or a funeral.

Such tasks can be carried out by relatives, an executor or a male executor, for example.

If you have special wishes in this regard, we recommend arranging them in advance with a professional.

How does Buy Food with Plastic find out about my bequest?

After your death, the relevant authority will open the will and inform the affected individuals and organizations.

However, you can let us know during your lifetime that you have included Buy Food with Plastic.

This is voluntary and does not obligate you to anything.
