Tag der Menschenrechte: Nahrung ist ein Grundrecht

Human Rights Day: Food is a Fundamental Right

On today, Human Rights Day, we are focusing on Article 25: “Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for health and well-being, including food, clothing, housing […].”

On December 10, 1948, the United Nations adopted the comprehensive, globally applicable human rights document. Its 30 articles lay out the foundations for peaceful and fair coexistence throughout the world. The right to food is one of the fundamental rights of all people.

Especially now, during the Advent season, we meet with family, friends and colleagues for meals, enjoy Christmas cookies, and have well-stocked refrigerators. For many of us, easy access to food is almost taken for granted. But unfortunately, not for everyone. According to Amnesty International, more than 811 million people worldwide still suffer from hunger. The World Food Programme even estimates that the proportion of people suffering from hunger will increase by 20% by 2050. Yet the right to food is a fundamental right.

Combating hunger, providing work and protecting nature

Since 2018, we have been working in our areas of operation to uphold the fundamental right to food. And we do even more! With our “Plastic Bottles for Meals” concept, we not only provide food to local communities. We also help tackle plastic pollution by recycling the collected plastic or processing it into beautiful and useful products. At the same time, we involve local people by creating jobs for our event organization in Nicaragua, Ghana and India, as well as in the upcycling factory in Nicaragua.

Reaching the goal in stages: The World Changing Campaign 2.0

But for us, the solution does not stop with recycling. We believe that education and awareness about using plastic more consciously are key to long-term change. Our vision is a world where no one suffers from hunger and nature is free from plastic. That is why we launched our World Changing Campaign 2.0.

In total, we need CHF 7.8 million to provide meals for 500,000 people in Ghana, Nicaragua and India, recycle up to 20 million plastic bottles, and establish 3 upcycling factories.

But we will reach our goal in stages: Our first stage, with a fundraising target of CHF 100,000, started on December 7, 2022, and ends on December 31, 2022.

Become part of the World Changing Campaign 2.0 now and help us reach the first goal!
