The Baler Machine - Efficient Recycling Progress for Our Upcycling Factory in Nicaragua

By acquiring a baler machine, we can make our factory in Nicaragua even more efficient and environmentally friendly. By compressing the plastic, we can transport 26 times more plastic per trip and use our storage capacity more efficiently. The baler thus improves both economic and environmental conditions and significantly increases our recycling capacity.

Every one of us has seen a baler machine before, namely in agriculture. In the form of the large tractor that collects straw or hay at the front and spits it out as compact bales at the back. In industry, a baler machine is a machine that compresses materials such as plastic, paper, or metal and presses them into manageable bales. This makes transport easier and storage more space-efficient. Balers are widely used in various industries, especially in the recycling sector, as they reduce the space required and ensure the efficient transport of recyclable materials.

Reduce CO2 emissions

Our upcycling factory in Nicaragua currently focuses on processing plastic caps and rings from PET bottles. For a bottle-to-bottle solution, a machine costing between 1 and 4 million CHF would be needed, requiring a lot of space and also having to run 24 hours a day to cover the cost of the purchase. However, so that the PET can still be further processed, we transport it to Nicaragua and pass it on to the local recycling company RENISA. Currently, our bottles can only be compressed by hand for transport. This leads to a bulky transport, with which we can only bring a very small amount of plastic to our partner per trip.

In addition, more and more plastic is being handed in at the community events than is needed for a meal. Thanks to our awareness workshops and our efforts to give plastic waste a concrete value, the demand for drop-off options is steadily increasing. We want to meet this need with an expanded infrastructure. In addition to the existing 10 collection containers, we want to make 18 more collection containers available and want to soon also collect plastic waste from the local population in more remote towns with a truck. We will therefore soon transport much more plastic to Managua, which will also lead to more trips.

Our Country Manager Frank Sarria has calculated that with a baler machine we can reduce the trips to Managua by 26 times. This not only means enormous time savings, but also a reduction in our gasoline consumption by an impressive 1,400 liters per year. Thanks to these improvements, we can reduce our CO2 emissions by a considerable 3,340 kg per year. Another advantage of the baler machine is that we can store more plastic. Furthermore, the handling and disposal of the plastic bales are made easier. The pressed bales are stable and well-bundled, which makes them easier to stack, store, and transport. In addition, the compact shape minimizes the risk of contamination and the spread of plastic waste, as they are less susceptible to wind and weather conditions.

At this point, we would like to encourage you to support us in this investment in our pursuit of greater sustainability. Every financial contribution brings us closer to our goal and enables us to purchase the baler machine and thus significantly expand our recycling capacity.

What you want to know about a baler machine

A baler (English: Baler Machine) for plastic works on a relatively simple principle. First, the collected plastic is loaded into the baler machine, where it is brought into a compact, rectangular shape through a combination of pressure and compression. This is done by hydraulic cylinders that generate the necessary force to press the plastic together.

Plastic balers are used in various areas, including recycling plants, landfills, recovery facilities, and other facilities that process large quantities of plastic waste. In our case, the baler machine plays a crucial role in processing the collected plastic bottles.

With an average of 5,000 plastic bottles collected at the events per month, the baler machine brings us several major advantages: The pressed plastic bales take up less space than the uncompressed bottles, which means that we can fit more plastic waste in our warehouse and later on the transporter. This allows us to optimally use our storage capacity and make transport more efficient.

Together we can make a significant contribution to environmental protection and further strengthen our commitment to a sustainable future. With the baler machine, we will not only maximize our recycling capacity, but also pave the way for new opportunities for upcycling and material recovery.
